Today In New York

“On Today in New York we try to focus on the issues in human terms”, states host Ponchitta Pierce, “and give more time to features and personalities involved with the community.” Utilizing a flexible, discussion format, Ponchitta can thus examine a subject like current unemployment not merely in terms of the psychological stress factors involved, but provide detailed advice on how best to market job skills and new employment opportunities. Viewers have also been given a preview of an exhibition of priceless pictures from the NewYork Public Library’s archives of over two million historic photos. And Ponchitta has explored the “new” in everything from fund raising and heart treatment to the formation of the Diocese of Metucheon, New Jersey—the first new Catholic diocese in the northeast in twenty years.

Ponchitta has served as an editor for Reader’s Digest, New York Bureau Chief of Johnson Publications, and Special Correspondent for CBS News. From 1973 to 1977 she was co-host of “The Sunday Show”; and from 1977 to 1980 she was co-host of “The Prime of Your Life”. She is listed in the Who’s Who of American Women and is extremely active in the community as a member of Mayor Koch’s Advisory Committee on Minority Affairs.

Community events, involving interviews, news reports, tri-state issues, the full scope of background developments plus contributions from the staff of News 4 New York, mornings take on a whole new dimension on TODAY IN NEW YORK with Ponchitta Pierce — a public affairs presentation of the WNBC-TV program department.
